Creative Writing Workshop at Lasham

Writers and aspiring writers met at Lasham last Sunday, December 8th, for two events designed to help them improve their skills. In the morning, eight people worked on creative writing techniques, including close observation. This group will meet again at monthly intervals over the winter. In the afternoon, 11 people (pictured, in the TV room) took part in a one-off training session on how to write articles for publication. Both events were organised in response to feedback from the audience at the recent Winter Talk, 'Writing about Flying', and were facilitated by club member and poet Helen Evans.

Old Lasham

Thank you to Colin Simpson for sending these to me. Photos probably taken late 1958.

The pic was taken by Charles Brown during an air to air shoot of my father in the T21 he built.

You can also see the site of the new linear hangar in the distance.

Also attach the air to air shot of the T21 flown by my father with Leigh Hood as P2. The fuselage obscures the fourth Lasham T2 hangar that disappeared many years ago. The T21 was sadly written off in a thunderstorm outflow in the late 1960's - sound familiar?

WINTER TALKS - WRITING ABOUT FLYING

Thirty-one people attended the third talk in Lasham's winter series, on Saturday, November 16th. 'Writing about Flying' focused on the creative process, giving examples from classic gliding texts and finishing with tips for aspiring authors. It was followed by an  workshop, where pilots tried some creative writing exercises for themselves. A further workshop is planned, for the new year, which will cover how to write articles for publication (Photographer: Paul Haliday).

Next talk NOVEMBER 30th   "Gliders & Wind Turbines - do they mix"  should be a lively evening.

Hope to see you there and thank you for your support of the Winter Talks programme

ATO Workshop at Lasham

The BGA is developing an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) with the aim of achieving approval during 2014. This will permit clubs to continue with training glider pilots under EASA regulations.

Those responsible for managing training at their clubs, including of course CFIs, will be instrumental in helping their club comply with the ATO requirements. It will be extremely helpful all round if there is an opportunity to discuss ATO issues between those who will be delivering this stuff and those currently engaged in designing the system to be compliant!

So the BGA will be holding an ATO workshop event at a number of locations during the coming winter before fine tuning the various systems that have to be in place ahead of the approval process in 2014. The the first one, was held here at Lasham on Sat 16th Nov.

"Miracle on the Hudson"

The size of this computer screen caused comment in the Lasham restaurant on on Wednesday, October 30: it's hardly the usual laptop! It belongs to the team from Black Hangar Studios, who are based on the south side of the airfield and who turned one end of the restaurant into a film edit suite after a power outage caused by the St Jude's Day storm. They've been filming part of "Miracle On The Hudson" at Lasham this year.
