Age and size restrictions

Age

14 is the minimum age for flying in Lasham gliders.

Anyone under 18 will require the written consent of a parent or guardian. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian whilst at the airfield.

Size and weight

The maximum weight to fly in our gliders is 103kg (16st 4lbs). The minimum weight is 45kg (7st 1lb). The instructor may weigh the person if they appear close to the limit, to ensure the glider is within ballast limitations.

People over 6' 4" (193cm) may not be able to fit into our gliders. The minimum height is approximately 5' 0" (152cm).

Mobility

Getting into a glider is similar to getting into a bathtub. Getting out requires more strength than getting in. To exit a glider, you need to be able to lift yourself up using your arms, and swing your legs out to the side. If you are unable to do this, we may still be able to accomodate. Contact us to discuss.

Alcohol

It is illegal to fly in a glider with blood alcohol concentration exceeding 20mg/100ml. This is less than one quarter of the drink-drive limit, effectively zero tolerance! This applies to both the passenger and instructor.

You must not have consumed any alcohol in the 8 hours preceding your flight. You must not have consumed a substantial amount of alcohol in the 24 hours preceding your flight.
