Most people join Lasham after completing either a trial lesson or learn to glide course. Trial Lessons include 30 days membership, while courses include 3 months membership. After these periods, the joining fee of £80 is waived.

A year's membership is available for £574 (See junior flying for prices for under 26s). With this you will get immediate access to our online booking system, where you can book instructional slots free of charge. You will then just pay for glider launches and air-time:

  • Winch launch:

    £12.85

  • Aerotow:

    from £39.95

  • Air-time (glider hire):

    £0.80 per minute

    (£48.00 per hour)

The majority of training flights are on the winch and last between 5 and 15 minutes, meaning a typical training flight will cost under £20.

To become a member, start by booking a Trial Lesson or Learn to Glide Course, or contact us to discuss full membership.

Progressing to solo and beyond

Depending on your aptitude, it can take anywhere from 40 to 120 flights to go solo. Your progress will be logged in your personal logbook and training record.

Once you have gone solo, you will require a daily "check flight" with an instructor before flying solo on that day, as different weather conditions can make the flight more challenging. As you gain more experience, you will be given more independence, be allowed to fly single seaters, and you will eventually gain your full license.

Evening groups

During the Summer months, we run evening groups (6pm to sunset). These are less busy than the daytime so are a great way of getting through the training syllabus quickly. These are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Booking requirements

Bookings are split into 2x AM and 2x PM per instructor. As gliders do not have engines, they require a lot of ground handling. Our booking system is free to use but we do require you to help on the ground while your instructor is flying with their other student. For AM bookings you are expected to be on site between 09:00 and 13:30, for PM bookings that is 13:30 to 18:00. This means gliding can remain a cheap and accessible form of flying.
