The learn to glide course is perfect for a complete novice, or someone who is already working towards solo. With just 2 student pilots to one glider and instructor, we guarantee a minimum of 20 flights over the week (Monday to Friday). Included is the instructor's time, unlimited winch launches and glider hire, and four 2000ft aerotows.

The aim of the course is to get you as far through our training syllabus as possible. We also include 3 months membership to Lasham, so you can return and fly at members' rates after your course.

Included with your course

Your course fee includes:

  • Guaranteed two students to one instructor ratio for the course, with one of our professional gliding instructors.
  • 3 months membership, starting from the first day of the course.
  • Unlimited winch launches for the duration of the course.
  • Unlimited glider hire for the duration of the course.
  • 4 aerotows to 2000ft (3 aerotows on a 4-day course).
  • Minimum of 20 flights guaranteed (16 flights on a 4-day course).
  • Free use of the Lasham glider simulator.
  • Gliding logbook, training record and material folder.
  • Any ground training your instructor recommends.

The experience

You'll train in our modern gliders, beginning promptly at 9am and continuing until 6pm each day to maximize flying time. The majority of your flights will utilize our winch system for launch, but you'll also experience aerotow launches, towed airborne by our "tug" aircraft. This ensures you gain familiarity with both launch methods used at Lasham.

Most of your flights will be quite short, lasting between 5 and 15 minutes, meaning you get to practice lots of takeoffs and landings. Depending on the weather, you should have the opportunity for some "soaring" flights, using rising air to stay airborne for much longer, potentially exceeding an hour.

Course dates

Courses run Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. 4-day courses are available during those weeks.

Our upcoming courses begin the week of Monday, 24th March 2025 and conclude the week of Monday, 29th September 2025.

There will be no courses running during the following periods:

  • 26th – 30th May (due to Nationals Competitions).
  • 14th – 18th July (due to Regional Competitions).

Additional information

The £195.00 deposit is required to book the course. The remaining balance is required 4 weeks prior to the course commencing.

Accommodation is available and will need to be pre-booked through the office. There is a café in the clubhouse which serves food all day. We also have a bar that opens in the afternoon.

Before booking, please read the age and size restrictions.

It is a requirement to pass an Air Law exam before flying solo at Lasham. If you are nearing solo flying standard, your instructor will show you the revision resources for this.

In the unlikely event the guaranteed number of flights is not met due to poor weather/issues within our control, then Lasham will rebate the launches as appropriate.

Any flying outside of the course package will be charged at the normal member flying rates.
