Accessibility and inclusion
Accessibility
Clubhouse
- Our clubhouse is on one level with step-free access at every entrance.
- Paved areas leading to and from all entrances.
- Wheelchair-accessible toilet in the clubhouse.
- Wheelchair-accessible shower in the bunkhouse, next to the clubhouse. Contact the office to request a key.
Parking
- Two large parking areas, one inside the gates and one outside the gates for visitors.
- Two allocated disabled parking spaces.

Parking spaces marked in blue are favourable for people with limited mobility.
Airfield access – if you are coming to fly:
- A tarmac perimeter track surrounds the airfield.
- By request, vehicles can access the launch point, to avoid walking across the grass airfield. Please get in touch with the office to arrange this.
Inclusion
It is a common misconception that only the able-bodied can fly gliders.
A UK driving license is often enough to meet the medical threshold for solo gliding. Please see the British Gliding Association guidance on medical requirements for more information.
Many solo pilots at Lasham and other clubs across the UK have disabilities, including hidden ones. If you're unsure, why not book a trial lesson?
At Lasham, we don’t see disability as a barrier but as a challenge, we can help you overcome.
Adapted gliders
Our fleet includes two two-seat training gliders that are adapted for people to fly without using their legs. In these gliders, there is a lever where the rudder can be operated with the hands, rather than feet.
-
ASK-21 778
This glider has a hand-rudder control in the front seat, where the student pilot typically sits.
-
ASK-21 773
The glider has a hand-rudder controls in the front and back seats. This was an exciting new addition to our fleet in 2024, because pilots without the use of their legs can use this glider to train to become instructors.

These two pilots just completed a long cross-country flight. One of them, a wheelchair user for 12 years following a spinal cord injury, has been flying solo for 11 years and is now training to become an instructor. Can you guess which one?
Hoist system
If mobility is severely restricted, we have a hoist system for getting people safely in and out of a glider cockpit.
Please get in touch when booking your flight, or at least a week in advance if you think the hoist system might be needed for your visit. Advance notice is needed to ensure that the batteries are fully charged and there is someone on site who has experience operating the hoist.
Simulator
Curious about trying gliding but feeling hesitant about getting in and out of a glider, or even nervous about flying? We understand these fears and we offer a two-seat simulator.
Our simulator is a valuable training tool for poor weather days or for practising scenarios that might be costly to repeat in the air.
Why not give it a try with an instructor? You’ll have the chance to explore everything in a relaxed setting. Sit in the cockpit, get hands-on with the controls, and experience what it feels like to glide. Both cockpits come equipped with fully functional instruments and controls, making it as close to real flight as possible without leaving the ground.
To book your session, contact the Lasham office.
